Tanx — manual

Tanx Version 1.0

Tanx is an original two-player, turn-based artillery game. Click the title with the left mouse button, choose options, then select PLAY.

History

Gary Roberts produced Tanx Version 1.0 for Amiga Computing in 1991. The game belongs to the long artillery-game tradition of players choosing an angle and velocity, then watching a simulated projectile cross destructible terrain. This Amiga interpretation expands that formula with a two-screen battlefield, wind and gravity settings, moving tanks, targets and devices that alter a shot in flight. Version 1.0 was released in February 1991.

Battle controls

  • Velocity: use the panel arrows to select 0–199.
  • Angle: use the panel arrows to select -90° through 150°; +90° fires straight up.
  • Fire: click the rocket button.
  • Move: use the tank arrows. A tank stays on its current flat ground section.
  • Scroll: use the landscape arrows to inspect the two-screen-wide battlefield.
  • Quit match: click the white flag to return to options.

Hold the left button for slow repeated adjustment. Hold both mouse buttons for fast adjustment. Players alternate shots; the first direct tank hit wins.

Browser controls

  • Keyboard: hold the arrow keys to move the original pointer; Enter or Space acts as the left mouse button, and Shift supplies the right-button fast-repeat modifier. On the status screen, Enter/Space returns to options and Escape does the same. Press R to reset.
  • Gamepad: use the left stick or D-pad to move the pointer. The primary button acts as left-click; on the status screen it chooses replay, while the secondary button returns to options.
  • Mouse or pointer: left-click selects controls. On the status screen, left-click replays and right-click returns to options.

Keyboard and gamepad movement are browser host adaptations. They feed the same verified Amiga JOY0DAT mouse-counter path as pointer movement.

Options

The original options cover wind strength and direction, gravity, mountain or foothill landscapes, targets, fans, pushers, pullers, sound, and two three-character player names. Targets grant a free shot; fans, pushers, and pullers alter projectile flight.

This concise manual is adapted from the deterministically recovered PP20 document. Host-specific controls are identified separately above.
